About Hockey Day In Houston

About Hockey Day In Houston

Hockey Day In Houston is a non-profit, collaborative, family-friendly celebration that unites Houston’s vibrant hockey community — nonprofits, youth/adult programs, ice rinks, colleges, charities, and corporate partners alike — in order to spark greater interest in the game, foster inclusivity, and drive lasting growth in a market without current professional hockey representation.

Led by the Houston Chapter of Hockey Players In Business (an international 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to building networks through hockey and giving back to the sport), the event combines resources, partnerships, and passion to create NHL-style grassroots energy right here in Houston. Through watch parties, street hockey, vendor activations, youth tournaments, live music, auctions, and community gatherings, we bring thousands of fans, players, and families together to celebrate hockey on and off the ice.

Our Impact

In just two years, Hockey Day In Houston has raised over $80,000 (gross) and reinvested more than $52,000 directly back into local hockey. Highlights include:

•  Over $12,000 in academic scholarships via the Slap Shot Scholarship program, honoring The Howe Foundation’s mission.

•  Funding to help organizations offset costs, grow programs, and promote the sport.

•  A second consecutive $25,000 matching donation from The Howe Foundation to amplify contributions and invest in Houston’s hockey future by hockey's most famous family.

•  Adding a youth hockey tournament to celebrate the end of the hockey season.

•  Formation of the Houston Hockey Hall of Fame to honor those who have made an impact both on and off the ice.

Event poster 2024

The Hockey Day in Houston planning committee is a fully volunteer, hockey passionate team from various hockey and business backgrounds.  The team was constantly in  communication while sharing new ideas to enhance the event by using their resources.  In doing so, former NHL, WHA, and minor league alumni were in attendance, new community partners were added such as the Harris County Houston Sports Authority, the Canadian and Quebec Government in Houston, Team Gillman Chevrolet, the Dallas Stars, and various businesses and vendors looking to support the mission.

With only 3 months of planning and zero budget, the event gained traction in the media as the date grew closer.  What initially was thought to be a gathering, the event exceeded expectations becoming Houston’s largest hockey event since the Houston Aeros ceased operations.

In September of 2023, the WHA Houston Aeros alumni returned to Houston to celebrate their 50th anniversary of the 1st major league hockey championship won in Houston.  Throughout the reunion, the players in attendance would constantly state the "Houston Is A Hockey Town!"

This statement was further proven on February 24th, 2024 as over 4,000 people attended Saint Arnold Brewing Company and another 500 plus attended the late game watch party at The Maple Leaf Pub and Nick's Place.

We look forward to a successful second year as we look for community partners to help grow the event and continue to show why Houston Is A Hockey Town!
