About Hockey Day In Houston

On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving 2023, members of the Houston Chapter of Hockey Players In Business, a national organization dedicated to network and give back to the game, met at Saint Arnold Brewing Company in preparation for the annual Oil Kings Turkey Shootout adult hockey tournament.  Saint Arnold Brewing Company had been a long-time supporter of the adult hockey community and the group in attendance had an idea of how to bring the hockey community together.

The idea of Hockey Day In Houston came from the organizers who had  prior experience working for NHL teams, in the event industry, and around the game of hockey.  The idea was pitched to Saint Arnold as a way to say Thank You for the support over the years.

The mission of the day is to promote the game of hockey in the Houston market by raising awareness of the ice and roller rinks, youth and college clubs, hockey related businesses and charities, but most importantly celebrating the sport that many of us have grown to love while coming together for Houston’s largest hockey watch party.

The Hockey Day in Houston planning committee is a fully volunteer, hockey passionate team from various hockey and business backgrounds.  The team was constantly in  communication while sharing new ideas to enhance the event by using their resources.  In doing so, former NHL, WHA, and minor league alumni were in attendance, new community partners were added such as the Harris County Houston Sports Authority, the Canadian and Quebec Government in Houston, Team Gillman Chevrolet, the Dallas Stars, and various businesses and vendors looking to support the mission.

With only 3 months of planning and zero budget, the event gained traction in the media as the date grew closer.  What initially was thought to be a gathering, the event exceeded expectations becoming Houston’s largest hockey event since the Houston Aeros ceased operations.

In September of 2023, the WHA Houston Aeros alumni returned to Houston to celebrate their 50th anniversary of the 1st major league hockey championship won in Houston.  Throughout the reunion, the players in attendance would constantly state the "Houston Is A Hockey Town!"

This statement was further proven on February 24th, 2024 as over 4,000 people attended Saint Arnold Brewing Company and another 500 plus attended the late game watch party at The Maple Leaf Pub and Nick's Place.

We look forward to a successful second year as we look for community partners to help grow the event and continue to show why Houston Is A Hockey Town!
